Myrthe van de Weetering & friends – Ghazal
Balance between poetry, jazz, pop and hip-hop by violinist and her versatile ensemble.
Welcome to the world of Ghazal, a fusion of poetry and music. On the eponymous album, violinist Myrthe van de Weetering combines two forms that are dear to her, without prioritizing one over the other. Now she will bring the album to life on stage with a widely dynamic ensemble. It features a melancholic violin, warm strings and horns, subtle double bass and bright drums. And a modular piano that adds an intriguing organic layer of electronics to the spectrum.
The poems on the album vary from celebrated literary works to haunting Native American poetry and a poem by a homeless man. But we also hear French rap and Dutch spoken word. The unifying theme is inner world versus outer world. This extends to the artwork of the album, which is the result of a creative project with prisoners in the US. It suits the versatility of Myrthe van de Weetering, who performed at North Sea Jazz and collaborated with the Metropole Orchestra as well as rapper Killah Priest.
